Our hands tell a story. The one here is a story of sacrifice. While the glove is torn, that is just a façade. In reality, the lines between work and family are often not that distinct. The pandemic has been a powerful pressure cooker and out of it has emerged altruism battered and bruised. The true faces of these heroes are covered, but I have seen them wear blue. My son was born during the pandemic. While I held him close one moment, I held the hand of a trauma victim the next. This cycle repeated throughout the night. As an orthopaedic resident, I was taking in-house call the night of his birth, not by obligation, but by choice. COVID-19 had created warriors among my team members and this was my sacrifice. I do not claim to be a hero, but I work with many.
